Tuberculosis disease patients are affected by a bacterial attack on the body. Most commonly this attack affects the lungs, although it is capable of invading any area of the body. In the past, this condition was known as consumption because patients would gradually waste away without proper treatment. After a patient has become infected, the bacteria multiply within the lungs, causing pneumonia. The lymph nodes are also affected and are generally inflamed. From this beginning, tuberculosis can easily spread to other areas. Patients who have weakened immune systems, such as the elderly population or diabetics, are more prone to contraction of the disease.

Specifically, the bacteria that most frequently is the cause of the disease is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, other bacterial organisms can be the source. Variations of the disease that are caused by these other bacteria are known as atypical tuberculosis and are potentially more serious than the regular disease. Tuberculosis patients typically acquire the disease by inhalation of infected sputum ejected by other tuberculosis patients when they sneeze, cough, shout, or spit. It is not possible to contract the disease only by contact. The infected air must be inhaled to become infected. One rare atypical tuberculosis is caused by the consumption of unpasteurized milk. Tuberculosis symptoms can take many months to appear after infection, but are most commonly manifested as fatigue, fever, night sweating, and weight loss. As the condition gets more pronounced, tuberculosis symptoms can worsen to include chest pain, difficulty breathing, and coughing blood or other material. Additionally, as the infection spreads to other parts of the body, more symptoms can occur.

In areas of the world where tuberculosis is more prevalent, the use of a vaccine is common to help children and infants avoid the disease. After contraction, some patients do not need any additional tuberculosis treatment as their immune systems are capable of dealing with the disease by surrounding infected areas with scar tissue. For patients who have inhaled the bacteria but do not have active symptoms, antibiotics will be used to control the infection. The most frequently used antibiotic is isoniazid. Taken for a period of half a year to a year, it will prevent the tuberculosis from becoming active. Tuberculosis treatment for patients who are already exhibiting active signs will be done with administration of a combination of medications in addition to isoniazid. The period of treatment can last several years until the infection is fully under control. In rare and severe cases, surgery on the lungs can help a patient recover when medication options have failed.

Although tuberculosis has been greatly reduced in many parts of the world, the infections still have the potential to be very dangerous. Advances in medicine, coupled with a general improved sense of sanitary conditions, have contributed to controlling the number of deaths related to tuberculosis disease.

Sarcoidosis disease is a condition in which a patient’s immune system cells do not go away after dealing with a potential infection. These cells come together forming granulomas, or lumps, which are manifested as inflammation. The disease can attack any organ in the body, but is most commonly begun in the lungs, lymph nodes, or skin. From these starting points sarcoidosis can spread anywhere, frequently attacking the eyes or liver. In rarer, but more serious cases, the disease can penetrate the heart or brain and be fatal. Granulomas that come together inside an organ can alter the way that particular organ functions, resulting in various symptoms depending on which organ in the body has been attacked.

It is not understood why the immune system cells do not dissipate after treatment of an infection. Thus, there is no known cause for sarcoidosis, but there are certain groups of people that are more prone to the disease. Sarcoidosis affects African Americans and Northern Europeans more than other groups and is more likely to be discovered in women. In addition, a family history of the disease can be an indicator that a person may be diagnosed with sarcoidosis. While many patients may experience no symptoms at all, some sets of sarcoidosis symptoms exist that are classified by other names. One of these common sets is known as Lofgren’s syndrome and is indicated by the presence of fever, inflamed lymph nodes, arthritis, and erythema nodosum, which is a rash comprised of purple or red bumps that appear on a patient’s shins or ankles. Generally, the rash has a tenderness and warmness when touched. Other common signs of the disease include the following: fatigue, depression, weight loss, night sweating, and skin discoloration or ulcers. Internally, sarcoidosis symptoms can include organ damage, lung scarring, or skin conditions such as lupus pernio.

Depending on which organs are affected sarcoidosis treatment can vary as well. In some cases, no treatment is needed and a natural recovery can be expected with minimal complications. In many cases where the skin is affected, a local physician will prescribe a topical medication or other pharmaceutical treatment to combat the disease. Sarcoidosis treatment is not always effective, though. For half of patients diagnosed with sarcoidosis, remission is common within three years. In ten years after diagnosis, 67 percent of patients experience remission. However, only one in twenty patients experience a full relapse. While in remission the disease is not active. Current research is being done to identify new and better ways to treat sarcoidosis.

Patients who notice a chronic or persistent inflammation should report the issue to a local doctor. As the disease is capable of spreading to other parts of the body, the sooner it is detected, the sooner it can be treated. Sarcoidosis disease can be a minor problem or major and care should be taken to find treatment immediately after detection.

To understand how best to treat an infection or disease, a patient should be aware of the viral and bacterial pathogenesis that is manifested in the condition. These complications can be as minor as a common cold or as serious as AIDS. Pathogenesis comes from the Greek words pathos and genesis and literally translates as the creation of a disease. The bacterial and viral pathogenesis starts with an introduction of the invader to human host cells. The pathogens then use the cell’s reproduction abilities to grow and spread to various parts of the human body. If the body’s natural defense mechanisms and induced defenses are unable to control and eliminate the foreign organism, then the results could be infections or disease. The resulting complication is entirely dependent on which strain of virus or bacteria has infected the host cells.

The causes are also quite different with various strains of invaders. A weakened immune system or essential vitamin deficiency can be an easy target for infection, but the virus pathogenesis for many species does not need even this reduced suppression to be effective. In many cases all that is needed is direct contact with the foreign organism to begin the replication process. This could include being close to an infected person when they sneeze or transmit bodily fluids. These infected fluids can be transferred to common surfaces and sent to new hosts when they touch the same surfaces. While some viruses and bacteria are able to survive airborne, the majority need to be transferred by fluids or carrier organisms such as mosquitoes. While the symptoms experienced by viral pathogenesis can vary depending on the specific foreign organism, the most common symptoms are those caused by the body’s attempt to fight the infection. These symptoms include nasal congestion or drainage, throat irritation, coughing, sneezing, fevers, headaches, and vocal hoarseness.

The best treatment method is obviously prevention. If a person is around someone that clearly exhibits symptoms of bacterial or viral infection, care should be taken to avoid the spread of bodily fluids. In addition, hands need to be washed frequently when in contact with infected people. Many antibacterial products exist to eliminate bacteria from the hands. A patient who is infected should take care to cover the mouth when sneezing and coughing. This will also help limit the spread of the virus or bacteria. Lastly, common areas should be kept clean to avoid bodily fluids that could remain on unwashed surfaces. Once a person is infected, a visit to a local physician or clinic is in order to determine the root cause of the complication and the best treatment options to combat it. For most bacterial invaders, antibiotics are available to aid in recovery. Treatment of viruses can be very different, but may include antiviral medications, vaccines, or simply letting the immune system take care of the infection.

The process of bacteria and virus pathogenesis can lead to difficult complications, but being aware of the process of infection and taking preventative measures can aid in a patient remaining healthy. As always, if complications arise or the infection is persistent, a doctor should be consulted to deal with the viral or bacterial pathogenesis.

There are many causes of human immunodeficiency disorders. Immunodeficiency disorders occur when the body’s immune response is reduced or completely absent. When the individual’s immune system is already defective at birth, it is called primary immunodeficiency. When the immunodeficiency occurs later in life or from a known cause, it is termed secondary immunodeficiency.

The immune system is made of a number of organs such as the spleen, lymph nodes, thymus and bone marrow. These organs secrete a variety of cells which protect the body against everything that the body perceives as foreign. The immune system is vital for all humans to survive. The cells in the immune system can help protect the body against a variety of harmful organisms such as viruses, bacteria, cancer cells and foreign substances (allergens). When the immune system detects anything foreign, it quickly reacts and destroys the offender. The immune system is quite complex and has a long memory.

However, there are times when the immune system does not function well. There are rare disorders some infants are born with, that cause problems in their immune system. These infants often have no ability to fight off simple infections like the common cold. Many of these children need to be kept in isolation and often require bone marrow transplants. Bone marrow transplants in some cases can cure the disorder but getting a matching bone marrow donor is often complicated.

Secondary causes of immunodeficiency are usually seen in adulthood. People who use long term corticosteroids do become immunodeficient and are quite prone to infections. The corticosteroids suppress the body’s ability to create “immune cells”, which can fight infection. Individuals who receive transplants are often treated with potent immunosuppressive drugs so that the body does not reject the organs. In turn, the drugs also make the individual quite prone to a variety of infections. People with cancers who receive anti cancer drugs also develop a suppression of their immune system and are prone to infections. Besides drugs, the other common causes of immune suppression are malnutrition, diabetes and certain cancers. People who have had their spleen removed are also at high risk for infection.

Overall, the most common cause of secondary immunodeficiency in adults is the immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The immunodeficiency virus has a great affinity for T cells, and often destroys them. Over time, the body has no capacity to fight off infections. When the number of white cells drops, the body is very susceptible to a variety of opportunistic infections.

The diagnosis of immunodeficiency syndromes is not difficult but does require extensive testing. However, the treatment is quite complex depending on the cause. In most cases of human immunodeficiency, treatment is required to prevent complications from a variety of infections.

Infections resulting from the hepatitis virus are a common cause of liver inflammation. It is expected that one in every twenty people will contract hepatitis at some point in their lives. The infection is classified into three main categories: hepatitis a, b, and c. There does exist a hepatitis d, e, and f, but these variations are much rarer. Hepatitis A is most commonly found in developing countries due to its proliferation in areas with poor sanitation. In western populations, most cases of this type of infection result from travel to these developing countries. Hepatitis a does not cause permanent liver damage. Hepatitis b, on the other hand, does cause permanent liver damage and can progress to cirrhosis and cause death. A third of the world’s population is thought to be infected. Spread by blood to blood contact, hepatitis c affects 300 million people worldwide.

However, these viral infections are not the only cause of hepatitis. It can also be caused by prolonged alcohol consumption as well. Symptoms of hepatitis a usually appear as soon as two weeks after infection and can appear in the following forms: fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, depression, weight loss, fever, nausea, loss of appetite, jaundice, and dark urine or light stools. Hepatitis B has primarily the same set of outward manifestations. For many victims of both types of infection, it is quite possible for the disease to go undetected as it can be asymptomatic. Most people who have contracted acute hepatitis c display no symptoms and for those who do, the signs are relatively minor. If a patient has been infected with hepatitis c for over six months, they are rediagnosed as having chronic hepatitis c. The symptoms for this variation can differ wildly between patients, but commonly include the above signs as well as itching, insomnia, unusual bleeding or bruising, and enlarged veins.

Hepatitis a has no treatment, but infected patients should get plenty of rest and water and avoid high fat foods and alcohol consumption. Acute hepatitis b cases do not often need and form of treatment because full developed immune systems are capable of dealing with the infection without outside help or interference. However, chronic hepatitis b should be treated to prevent the disease from worsening into cirrhosis or cancer of the liver. While no medications are capable of completely eradicating chronic hepatitis b, many antiviral drugs can stop the infection from spreading. A hepatitis vaccine can be used to combat both a and b varieties provided it has been caught soon enough. In hepatitis c patients, medical intervention is almost always required. Twenty percent of cases that do not receive hepatitis treatment result in death. Most commonly, a regimen of medications is taken to stop the growth of the virus. In addition to drugs, many new treatment options have been discovered. One such new method is the Hemopurifier, a device which eliminates infectious viruses directly from the bloodstream. There is no hepatitis vaccine for the c variation.

If a patient feels that they have contracted hepatitus, a local physician should be alerted immediately. The doctor will run tests to deterine the specific type of infection and the best course of hepatitis treatment. Hepatitis virus complications can range from minute to severe, therefore early detection of the disease is of paramount importance.

Gastritis pain is due to an inflammation of the stomach. It can also be because of an erosion or irritation of the stomach lining. The stomach issues may be further aggravated by the presence of peptic ulcers. Two types of the disease exist: acute gastritis and chronic gastritis. The first, acute gastritis, is characterized by the erosion of the mucosal lining. Chronic gastritis is the experience of heartburn being felt in the chest region. In many incarnations of the chronic variety, the internal mechanism is that the body’s immune system misidentifies the stomach as a harmful pathogen and sends antibodies to combat the stomach. This can result in severe damage or even destruction of the stomach and its lining. Metaplasia can also occur, causing the gastric mucosa cells to change structure to imitate intestinal mucosa cells.

Gastritis can be caused by many different factors including vomiting, pronounced stress, or by regular use of anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. More serious problems that may cause the condition are Helicobacter pylori infections, bile reflux, pernicious anemia, or other bacterial and viral infections. Acute gastritis can be the result of alcohol consumption as the alcohol can simulate the production of hydrochloric acid. Also, chronic gastritis can be caused by preexisting medical conditions including HIV or AIDS, Crohn’s disease, kidney or liver failures, or a connective tissue disorder. A patient who has contracted the condition may exhibit the following gastritis symptoms: nausea, abdominal pain or bloating, indigestion, hiccups, black stools, burning sensations in the stomach, loss of appetite, or vomiting of blood or dark material that appears like coffee grounds. If any of these symptoms are present, a patient should contact a local physician to determine the best method of gastritis treatment.

Depending on which gastritis symptoms are present, the doctor will perform some tests to determine the underlying problem that is causing the discomfort. These tests may include an upper endoscopy, blood tests, gastroscopy, or a stool test. In the simplest cases, the avoidance of spicy foods or taking antacids may be an effective cure. Stomach complications that have been caused by the specific Helicobacter pylori bacterium will need to be treated with a regimen of antibiotic medications and acid blockers to prevent heartburn. Additionally, proton pump inhibitors may be prescribed to reduce acid production. If pernicious anemia is the source of the issues, the gastritis treatment will be to administer injections of the vitamin B-12. As with any serious medical issue, a patient’s treatment should not begin without consultation of professional medical personnel.

The pain caused by gastritis can range from slightly irritating to extremely painful. In addition, the symptoms that may be experienced can only add to the pain and discomfort. However, the treatment options available are relatively simple and can be used effectively to treat gastritis pain.

Pulmonary emphysema is a disorder where one has difficulty blowing all the air out of the lungs during breathing. The disorder affects small air passages and eventually destroys elasticity in the airways. This leads to hyper inflated lungs which do not work properly. As the condition progresses, the number of air sacs decreases and one is not able to oxygenate blood. The typical signs of emphysema include shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, inability to perform exercise, dry cough, loss of appetite and fatigue.

The risk factors for an emphysema lung include smoking, old age, exposure to second hand smoke, occupational exposure to fumes and dust, breathing indoor fumes, HIV infection and certain medical disorders like Marfan syndrome. The diagnosis of an emphysema lung is not difficult. One needs to undergo lung function tests, a chest x-rays and a CT scan.

Consumers should understand that the available emphysema treatment does not cure the disorder. All present day treatments can help reduce symptoms and prevent worsening of the condition. To begin with, all individuals who smoke must discontinue this habit. This is the only way to reduce damage to the lungs. It is well understood that discontinuing smoking is difficult but there are smoking aids available (eg, Zyban, Nicoderm, Chantix).

One emphysema treatment that does help relieving symptoms is using bronchodilators. These drugs that can help relieve cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and improve exercise tolerance. Sometimes inhaled corticosteroids are used when there is exacerbation of the condition. Because gastro esophageal reflux can worsen emphysema, most individuals also need to take protein pump inhibitors and lose weight. Supplemental oxygen is a very useful therapy. Portable home oxygen devices are now available which are safe to use. A key aspect of treating emphysema is rehabilitation. This involves education, exercise training and behavior modification – changes which can help improve the quality of life and exercise tolerance.

When the condition gets worse and an infection is suspected, patients are started on antibiotics. All individual who have emphysema should get annual vaccinations against the common cold virus. The role of surgery is limited in diffused emphysema. Individuals who have localized disease may be candidates for surgery but the results are, at best, mediocre. Moreover, surgery is associated with a number of life threatening complications. The last option is a lung transplant, but the biggest impediments to the procedure are lack of availability of donors and high cost.

Home measures that may help improve symptoms of emphysema include breathing exercises to help get rid of excess air in the lung and improve elasticity. While these exercises do not cure pulmonary emphysema, at least they can help ease shortness of breath in this type of patients.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a serious medical disorder that affects the lung and causes severe nutritional deficiencies. This inherited disorder affects cells which produce sweat, saliva, digestive juices and mucus. In normal people, these secretions are thin and slippery, but in CF patients, the defective gene causes secretions to become extremely viscous, sticky and rubbery. Instead of acting as a soft lubricant, the secretions plug up pores, ducts and essential tubes which are important for functioning of the lungs and pancreas. The most dangerous complication of CF is lung failure. More over the viscid secretions block the pancreatic duct (tube) and thus causes failure of release of important enzymes for digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Individuals who have cystic fibrosis symptoms are generally sick. The symptoms of CF do vary; one child may have symptoms of the lung and the other may have symptoms of malabsorption. CF usually presents soon after birth. The infant may not grow properly, will have bulky and oily stools and develop recurrent lung infections. With time, the sweat will be very salty and the infant may develop wheezing and coughing. Other cystic fibrosis symptoms include recurrent nasal polyps and wide bluish looking finger nails (clubbing).

CF is due to a defective gene which regulates salt secretions. Once this occurs, the secretions become very sticky and viscous. The affected gene is acquired from each parent. If the child only has one gene, he or she will not be affected but will be a carrier of the disease. People who carry the gene are otherwise healthy. The biggest risk factor for CF is parent history. If you and your partner each carry the gene, your baby has a 25 percent chance of having CF. This risk is even greater if you are of European descent. The diagnosis of CF includes a sweat test and other genetic analysis. Because the disorder is inherited, other members of the family are usually checked to determine their status. Today, genetic blood testing is available for pregnant females who may want to know if the fetus is affected.

CF is a serious illness and causes a variety of lung infections including recurrent pneumonias, sinusitis, bronchitis and severe asthma. Coughing up blood and collapse of the lungs are also very common. Ultimately, most people die from lung complications. Because of the severe diarrhea, affected patients develop severe nutritional deficiencies and are unable to absorb most vitamins.

Cystic fibrosis treatment is quite demanding and requires the use of antibiotics to clear infections. Mucus thinning drugs are available but tend to have side effects. Bronchodilators are the mainstay when one develops wheezing. Most patients need physical therapy to drain the chest and help cough up thick secretions. Other aspects of cystic fibrosis treatment include use of oral pancreatic enzymes to help absorb nutrients and prevent malabsorption.

Lung transplant is an option but the problem is obtaining a donor. In CF, both lungs have to be transplanted and there is a very high risk of getting the lungs infected after surgery. So far, not much progress has been towards finding a cure for cystic fibrosis; yet researchers are now studying ways to insert copies of normal genes into cell of the respiratory tract.

Chronic pancreatitis is a medical disorder where there is chronic inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a long thin organ lying just behind the stomach. Its function is to release important enzymes that can process foods and also secret insulin which regulates blood sugar. The pancreas is a very fragile organ and can easily get traumatized. When the pancreas secretions of enzymes are blocked by a gall stone or the organ is damaged by certain drugs or alcohol, it spills the enzymes in the vicinity which then start to digest the pancreas itself. Acute pancreatitis is a common medical disorder and can present itself with severe pain, nausea and vomiting. However, when the pancreas has been subject to insults from alcohol and drugs for a long time, chronic pancreatic results.

The typical features of pancreatitis include upper abdominal pain which may radiate to the back, difficulty processing foods, loss of weight, indigestion and frequent episodes of diarrhea. The stools appear oily and tend to float on water- primarily because they contain fat which has not been processed. In most cases of chronic pancreatitis pain, there is also severe nausea and vomiting. The other feature of chronic pancreatitis pain is that soreness is continuous and unrelenting.

Pancreatitis has many causes including alcoholism, gall stones surgery, medications, cystic fibrosis, high levels of fat, infection, and smoking. In pancreatitis the organ is severely damaged and no longer makes enzymes to process food. Thus these individuals typically develop diabetes, malnutrition and are at a risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

The diagnosis of pancreatitis involves the use of some blood and stool test, and Ct scans of the abdomen. Chronic pancreatitis treatment is quite difficult disorder and not satisfactory in most individuals. These individuals are frequently in and out of the hospital, chiefly because of the severe pain. Chronic pancreatitis treatment chiefly involves pain control. Pain management may involve nerve blocks, use of potent narcotics and use of pain pumps. Most individual are given pancreas enzyme supplements to help the body process food and increase absorption of nutrients. Enzymes are available in pill form. A visit to the dietitian may also help so one can eat foods that will not promote diarrhea or indigestion. In some cases the pain is unbearable and surgery may be the only option. There are various techniques of doing pancreatic surgery but it is best to visit a surgeon who specializes in treating this organ.

All individual who have pancreatitis should undertake lifestyle changes to prevent pain attacks. These include avoidance of alcohol and discontinuing smoking, eating a low fat diet and drink lots of water.
There are a variety of health supplements that have been touted to treat pancreatitis but there is no medical evidence to prove that. If you are interested in trying these alternative health supplements, talk to your physician first- most are more harmful than the chronic pancreatitis itself.

A chronic infection usually means that an infection has been present for a long time or keeps on recurring. In general, long standing infections develop after an acute infection. Acute infections usually last a few days but prolonged infections can last several weeks or even months. In rare cases, one may not even be aware of the occult infection and thus continue to transmit it to others.

Worldwide, infections claim millions of lives each year. The chief reason is due to unsanitary living conditions and poor hygiene. The sad truth is that the majority of these infections can be prevented by implementing preventive care measures. An infection is chronic in medical terms when an individual has the following symptoms:

- Persistent fatigue lasting 3 months or more
- Weight loss
- Low grade fever
- Decreased white cell count
- Night sweats and chills
- mild to moderate pain

A prime example of a recurrent infection is hepatitis C and AIDS. Both these disorders usually have no symptoms in the early stages and yet the individual remains infectious. Once acquired, HIV cannot be cured and it is considered to be a long standing infection because the virus remains in the body for years. Hepatitis C similarly can be acquired from sexual intercourse, blood transfusions or sharing of infected needles. The diagnosis of hepatitis and AIDS are usually only made after a blood test. In most cases of hepatitis C, the majority of individuals go on to become chronic carriers of the virus. Moreover, signs and symptoms of liver damage or even cancer may not appear for 15- 20 years after the infection is acquired.

Other more common recurrent infections include ear infections in children, tuberculosis, herpes simplex, Lyme disease and hepatitis B. With recurrent infections, the organism continues to damage the body and then causes repeated symptoms. Eventually long standing infections weaken the immune system and the individual becomes symptomatic. This manifests as weight loss and extreme malaise.

The diagnosis of a long standing infection can be difficult as the symptoms are not specific. In any case, if an infection is suspected, blood cultures, chest x-rays or stool analysis are usually the first steps taken. Depending on the individual and cause, chronic infection treatment may require hospitalization and use of intravenous antibiotics. In most cases of chronic infection treatment, one tries to improve the nutritional status and adopt changes in lifestyle. Since infections can cause serious damage to the body, recovery can be long and protracted. Besides the infection, one also has to treat the complications and increase energy level.

The best way to avoid chronic infection is to adopt healthy life styles, eating good nutritious food, exercise on a regular basis, avoid tobacco and limiting alcohol intake.
